A couple of days ago I found this great interview with Yuval Noah Harari on Youtube that I’d like to share with you. In the interview hosted by A THING BY, a collective of filmmakers based in Milano, he is talking about the world before, during and after Coronavirus.
My boyfriend and I planned to go to Amsterdam and Berlin this spring but as everything was shut down and we weren’t able to cross borders we postponed the trip. Luckily, we bought roadbikes before the lock down and went cycling quite often during April. As I miss travelling a lot, I suggested to do a bike trip before the lectures start again. So we packed our stuff and went on the road for two days.
As an Ethnologist you pick a region where you want to do your research (that can be all over the world, even in your home country), and a topic on which your research is about. This topics can be summarised to subdisciplines of Ethnology, for example political structures, medicine or religion.
Some years ago I spent my summer holidays with my family in Brazil. My parents have both travelled through South America and my mother has even spent some time living in Brazil. She planned the whole journey showing different aspects of this huge country.
We started in Rio de Janeiro, the former capital of the country that was a colony of Portugal. Fun fact, Rio has even been the capital of Portugal for a while in the early 19th century. We stayed in a hotel in Niteroi, it is safer there than in the city center and with the ferry it doesn’t take long to go to the center.
Ethnology, also known as Social anthropology is a discipline with a lot of twists and turns in the past 200 years. Ethnologists came up with new theories, some approved and even enhanced them and on the other hand, others disapproved them. I’d like to give you an overview of the most important theories and tell you where they come from.
Sooo, Thailand! I’ve spent three weeks in the home country of my aunt (she is Thai and moved to Switzerland when she married my uncle), not with her, but with three friends. We’ve been backpacking during summer, which means off-season. That gave us the chance to decide spontaneously where to go and what to do instead of planning everything in advance. Nevertheless we had some things we wanted to do like seeing elephants, going on a trek and relaxing at the beaches. We managed to do all of that and way more during our trip.
